How to Clean Gold Jewelry at Home (Safely): A Step-by-Step Guide
Gold jewelry deserves care. It may not tarnish easily, but over time, it can lose its shine from lotions, perfumes, and the oils from your skin. The good news is that you can bring back that golden glow right at home, using just a few gentle tools and a little patience.
Here’s how we clean gold jewelry safely and effectively in our own workshop, and how you can do the same.
Step 1: Prepare a Gentle Cleaning Solution
Start with a small bowl of warm water, not hot. Add just a few drops of mild dish soap. Stir until it creates a light, soapy mixture. Avoid anything harsh, especially bleach or chlorine-based cleaners. They can weaken gold and damage gemstones over time.
If you’re cleaning several pieces, make sure they have enough space to move around in the bowl.
Step 2: Soak Your Jewelry
Place your gold jewelry in the bowl and let it soak for about 15 to 20 minutes. This softens any dirt, lotion, or residue sitting on the surface.
If the jewelry has gemstones, don’t soak it for too long. Some stones, like pearls or emeralds, can be sensitive to water exposure. In that case, dip a soft cloth into the solution and gently clean the surface instead.
Step 3: Brush Gently
After soaking, use a soft toothbrush to clean your gold jewelry. Focus on the crevices where dirt tends to hide, especially under settings or clasps. Use light strokes, almost like you’re brushing a leaf.
Avoid hard bristles, which can scratch gold, especially if it’s high karat or has a polished finish.
Step 4: Rinse and Dry Carefully
Rinse each piece under clean, lukewarm water. Do this over a bowl or sink with the drain closed. You’d be surprised how easily small earrings can slip away.
Pat dry using a lint-free cloth or a soft microfiber towel. Avoid tissues or paper towels—they can leave scratches.
Step 5: Polish for a Final Shine
Once dry, gently buff your jewelry using a polishing cloth made for gold. This step brings out that rich, buttery shine without any chemicals.
Store your pieces in a clean, dry jewelry box or a soft pouch afterward. Keeping them separate prevents scratches and tangling.
A Few Quick Tips from the Bench
-
Take your gold jewelry off before swimming or showering. Chlorine can dull the finish.
